An Irish student team made an impressive mark on the international stage by representing Ireland at the 2025 Global Health Innovation Summit, held at the I-Hotel Conference Center in Champaign, Illinois. The team, SensEye, presented an AI-powered solution designed to make eye care more accessible and affordable worldwide.
The SensEye team—comprised of Thomas Joyce from University of Limerick (UL), Josh Kamalarajah from Queen's University of Belfast (QUB) and Emily Waldron from Trinity College Dublin (TCD)—was selected as Ireland’s representative following their success in the Global Health Innovation Grand Challenge, a blended innovation programme that empowers multidisciplinary student teams to address pressing global health challenges through creativity, collaboration, and responsible innovation.
This initiative involved students from Trinity College Dublin, Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), and the University of Limerick (UL), who worked across disciplines and institutions to develop real-world healthcare solutions. SensEye earned top honors at the national Demo Day in Ireland, securing their place at the global summit.
At the Summit, which welcomed 456 attendees from 33 institutions across 16 countries and 6 continents, SensEye stood out among more than 50 student innovation teams. The event brought together leaders from academia, industry, government, and philanthropy to explore the future of healthcare through interdisciplinary collaboration.
The team’s innovative use of artificial intelligence for early detection and intervention in eye care showcased how student-led solutions can address critical needs in global health, particularly in underserved communities.
